School Composting: from Waste to Resource

Through the joint work of Primary School “Vožd Aleksinac” (Serbia) and CPI Plurilingüe O Cruce (Cerceda, Galicia, Spain), students learn how to properly separate biowaste, manage a composting station, and use the obtained compost in the school garden. Ecology is connected with science, IT, robotics, and technology through practical tasks and teamwork.

The project includes measuring the temperature and humidity of compost, keeping records, and creating charts. Results, instructions, and lesson plans are published as Open Educational Resources (OER), so that other schools can easily repeat the entire process. Surplus compost from the Spanish partner is shared with other schools and institutions in the community.

What the Cycle Looks Like

• 1) Separation and collection of biowaste
• 2) Composting (aeration, moisture, temperature) with measurements
• 3) Maturation and data analysis
• 4) Application of compost in garden beds and sharing knowledge through OER.

Project Benefits

  • Less waste, more high-quality compost
  • Learning through practice (science, IT, robotics, technology)
  • The school garden as a permanent teaching resource
  • Open Educational Resources for other schools
  • Cooperation between the school and the local community

The project develops students’ ecological awareness, teamwork, and digital skills. Through regular workshops and website posts, experiences and results remain available to everyone who wants to start similar initiatives.
