Although our school does not yet have the technical capacity to recycle all organic waste generated in the canteen, we have started composting fruit peels and plant-based leftovers.
A group of responsible students, supported by teachers, is in charge of monitoring the compost bin. They regularly check moisture and aeration conditions and carefully alternate layers of organic waste with structural material (such as dry leaves or shredded cardboard) to ensure proper decomposition.
After several months of work, we are now preparing to carry out a quality control analysis of the compost by measuring its main physical and chemical properties. This will allow us to evaluate its maturity and suitability as fertiliser.
Our goal is to use the compost in our school garden when spring arrives, closing the natural cycle of organic matter and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
Through this project, students experience environmental science in a hands-on way and understand how small actions can contribute to a more sustainable future.
